The Don Was-produced sessions for a putative new Beach Boys album. In fact Was produced the tracks and Brian the vocals: the full band was present. The sessions were abruptly terminated when Carl announced he didn't like Brian's new material and refused to take any further part. Important note: the widely bootlegged version of "Soul Searchin'" from these sessions comprises the BW-produced vocals (but not all of them...) 'flown in' to the original Wilson/Paley session track. The booted - and now released, on the 2013 box set - version of "You're Still A Mystery" uses the 1995 track (this recently discovered fact runs counter to what was believed for decades). This was the last time Brian & The Beach Boys were in the studio cutting original material until May 2011. |
