solo album Carl Wilson is released, peaking at #185. Extracted single "Hold Me/Hurry Love" fails to chart. Simultaneously, Carl leaves the band following growing unease with their lack of rehearsals and choice of material, and states that he won't rejoin until "1981 means as much as 1961". To fill the gap, the rest of the band insist on Brian returning to the stage, and UK BB imitator Adrian Baker is invited to fill out the sound. Brian and Marilyn's divorce becomes final on the 4th. |

Carl embarks on a short solo tour of clubs to promote his album, commencing on the 5th in Chicago and ending on the 25th in San Francisco. Later in the summer he will open for such acts as The Doobie Brothers. |

cashing in on a current fad, Capitol assemble a sequence of eight beach Boys classics ("Good Vibrations/Help Me Rhonda/I Get Around/Shut Down/Surfin' Safari/Barbara Ann/ Surfin' USA/Fun, Fun, Fun") and are much gratified when "The Beach Boys' Medley/God Only Knows" peaks at #12. (A projected 2nd medley is assembled for release later in the year, but by then the craze has run its course.). The band perform a second Independence Day show in Washington, which they follow the next day with a nationally televised gig from Long Beach which is rightly considered to be the worst the band have ever done; Brian's performance is terrifyingly bad and the rest of them aren't much better. |
September |
trailer 45 from Mike's solo album, "Looking Back With Love/One Good Reason" is released on Casablanca. It fails to score. Meanwhile Mike is touring on his own with The Endless Summer Beach Band. Mike marries Cathy Martinez in Santa Barbara on the 17th . Legendary DJ Wolfman Jack officiates. Released only in Australia, Brian Wilson/Beach Boys Rarities is later withdrawn owing to liner notes stating that The Survivors were The Beach Boys (something thought to be the case at the time). The album is the only legal release of "What I Say", recorded live in Sydney, Australia 1964. |
