on the 2nd Brian is admitted to Cedars-Sinai Hospital for two weeks, for a complete physical. He is then flown to Kona, HI, on the 16th, to begin his treatment by Landy. |
February | Carl's second solo album, Young Blood, is released, but fails to chart. |

cover of the Mamas & Papas "California Dreamin'" appears on Mike Love project Rock & Roll City, rerecordings of classic sixties songs. Available on cassette only from branches of Radio Shack, it reportedly sells some 100,000 units. Brian returns to LA. Carl solo 45 "What You Do To Me/Time" peaks at #72. It will become a Beach Boys concert staple for the summer, as will another album track, "Rockin' All Over The World". |

the band gain huge publicity and public support by being effectively banned from the annual Independence Day show in Washington when then-Secretary of the Interior James Watt decrees that rock bands attract the wrong element, a statement seen as a personal attack on the Beach Boys. Vice-president George Bush invites the band to visit the White House on the 17th. Unsuccessful second single from Young Blood, "Givin' You Up/Too Early To Tell", is released. Dennis marries Shawn on the 28th, thus making Mike Love Dennis' father-in-law as well as his cousin. |
September |
Capitol release Rarities, a collector's dream of non-album A & B sides, alternate versions and previously unreleased material (including an unreleased track for "Good Vibrations"). It fails to chart and is soon withdrawn under threat of legal action by the band, who consider it to be not representative. Third release on Mike's HitBound label is various artists effort Christmas Party, which includes a Mike solo track, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and two duets, "Do You hear What I Hear ?" with Mary Macgregor and "Jingle Bell Rock" with Dean Torrence. Dennis plays his last show with the band, at the LA County Fairgrounds, Pomona on the 26th. |

Mike Love Christmas single, "Jingle Bell Rock/Let's Party" is released only in England. The A side is a different mix of the Christmas Party track. |
December |
Dennis Carl Wilson drowns while swimming in Marina Del Ray on the 28th. He was twenty-four days past his 39th birthday. |
