Alan & Mary Anne's twins, Andrew Neal & Robbie, are born on the 8th, Scottsdale, AZ. Landy contacts Gary Usher with a view to producing a Brian Wilson solo album. Over the next 10 months the 'Wilson Project' will see over a dozen tracks recorded in some form or other ranging from basic demo to finished master. Very few will ever see the light of day. |

two albums are made available, but not in the stores. The mail-in Sunkist album Good Vibrations From The Beach Boys is a 10-track compilation, which is (to date) the only official release of a live version of Del Shannon's "Runaway" (recorded in Cleveland, OH, fall 1981). Equally difficult to acquire is Fourth Of July - A Rockin' Celebration Of America, released on Mike's custom Love Foundation label. It includes, amongst non-BB performances from July 4th shows in Washington DC (1984) & Philadelphia (1985), versions of "Back In The USSR" with Ringo Starr, "Come Go With Me" with The Oak Ridge Boys, "Surfer Girl" with Julio Iglesias and "Barbara Ann" with Jimmy Page & friends. An uncredited (except as a small sticker on the shrink-wrap) studio 'bonus' track is the Gary Griffin/Tom Mather composition "Happy Birthday America", performed by Mike Love & friends. |
June |
semi-autobiographical 45 "Rock & Roll To The Rescue/Good Vibrations" (the latter a live recording from London) is released. Produced by Terry Melcher (and an uncredited B. Wilson) and featuring an enthusiastic lead from Brian, it peaks at #68. Fan club Honeys album It's Like Heaven is 'released': of interest are the 1973 Fort Dodge, IA tracks (to date, this is the only time that "Snowflakes" has seen the light of day). |
July |
25th anniversary package Made In USA is released by Capitol. Understandably heavy on the years 1962-69, it charts at #96 and includes the preceding single. Band performed at Farm Aid II, 4th. |
August |
a revised version of "California Dreamin'" released as a 45 makes it to #57 (the B side is a 100th birthday tribute to a certain statue: "Lady Liberty" is a reworded and partially re-recorded "Lady Lynda"). |
December |
the Beach Boys perform a 25th anniversary show on the beach in Hawaii (12th). Filmed (and overdubbed) for later TV screening on March 13th, guests include Three Dog Night, Glen Campbell, Ray Charles performing "Sail On Sailor" and the Everly Brothers. A highlight is "Spirit Of Rock & Roll", a still-unreleased solo track from the Wilson/Usher sessions. Earlier in the month, on the 6th, Brian performed a short set at an NAS tribute show. |
