note: although they took place in the relatively recent past, the Smile sessions can sometimes be confusing, contradictory and downright frustrating, a state of affairs that later reportage has further muddied. Accordingly, the dates listed below are subject to further revision as the threads are slowly unravelled. My grateful thanks to all researchers involved in the quest. | |

The dates for the vocals sessions used here are taken from the booklet of the first (1990) CD reissue of Pet Sounds, and in some cases, the tape boxes. |
2
The Uncalled For Three later became The Pickle Brothers, a comedy act who often opened for The Beach Boys and were at one time signed to Brother Records, where Mike produced some tracks for them. |
3
Brian was the "Hot-Line" guest: interviewed by phone he promoted the soon to be released Pet Sounds LP. |
4
These sessions were all filmed, apparently at the instigation of the band: the exact date of the vocal session footage isn't known. |
5
The building used for this shoot was Fire Station 27 at 1355 N. Cahuenga Blvd., Hollywood. It now houses the Hollywood branch of the Los Angeles Fire Department Historical Society. The actual date of the shoot is currently unknown, but has to be before the 21st, and not the 23rd, as has been claimed. |
6
This show saw the first live performance of "Good Vibrations" and not, as long thought, the next day's shows. |
7
Recorded for possible release, Brian flew in to rehearse the band, and joined them for the encore of the 2nd show. Eventually released in 2016. |
8
Not so much a proper session, more Brian (and Van Dyke) giving famed local KHJ DJ Humble Harve Miller a recap of what they'd been working on recently. |
9
This session was filmed by David Oppenheim for the Inside Pop TV special, and it has been claimed that a confrontation between Mike and Brian over the lyrics to "Surf's Up" was captured on camera. However, the discovery in 2006 of Oppenheim's film reel notations refutes this supposition: there is no mention of any such disagreement, and the rest of the band had temporarily left by the time Brian performed "Surf's Up" in any case (returning for "You're Welcome"). The tape for the band portion of the session is missing, presumed lost/erased. "Ball and Mitt" was apparently just that - an impromptu ball game in the studio that Brian taped and directed. |
