| |
1
| A Dennis Wilson session, probably unconnected with Smile. |
2
|
Brian produced two other songs for studio photographer Jasper: "Crack The Whip" and "When I Get Mad I Just Play My Drums" |
3
|
All the "Tones/Part 3/Tune X" sessions are Carl Wilson sessions, again probably unconnected with Smile. |
4
|
Paul McCartney was in LA at the time and dropped in to this session. Legend says he either co-produced "Vege-Tables", or chomped on some celery, or both. Reality and the session tapes say he didn't. The session ran into the early hours of the 11th, and contrary to a long held belief, "On Top Of Old Smokey" wasn't recorded. |
5
|
The Chain reaction were a local band whose members included a very young Steve Tyler. |
6
| It was after this show that Carl was arrested for draft evasion, and swiftly bailed. |
7
| Carl missed the first show due to his legal battle against being drafted. |
8
|
It has been claimed that this was a session for the final mixing, editing and assembly of a completed Smile album master. This is almost universally regarded as spurious, as on the best available evidence many tracks remained incomplete (or in some cases, unrcorded), and it's hard to understand how an assembly session could require the presence of two drummers, a percussionist, a guitarist, a string bass player and a keyboardist. |
9
| Part of "Hawaiian Song" was recycled into "Little Pad". |
10
|
Both shows recorded for the proposed Lei'd In Hawaii album (Brother 9002). Bruce didn't make the trip, but Brian did. |
11
|
Long considered a session to rehearse material for the Hawaii shows, in fact this was an attempt to make the Hawaii tapes suitable for release (one show had technical problems, the other was simply a bad performance) by re-recording the songs as live. When this also proved unworkable, the band gave up on the live project and started a new studio album. |
12
| A Bruce Johnston session. |
13
|
Redwood were Brian's signing to Brother: when the rest of the band started taking Brian's productions for them and making Beach Boys songs out of them, they left the label, becoming phenomenally successful as Three Dog Night. |
14
| The fateful first encounter with the Maharishi. Unbelieveably, it was Dennis' idea. |
15
|
Mike & Bruce were in attendence, and after the screening, got up on stage with John, Paul & Ringo to "sing a couple of songs", including "Sloop John B". |
